Stanstead receives $2.7 million for water treatment plant modernisation
Andrée Laforest, Quebec’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, and Orford MNA Gilles Bélanger jointly announced $ 2,751,450 in financial assistance on Monday for the town of Stanstead’s project to modernize its water treatment infrastructure. According to Belanger, the full cost of the project is more than $6.3 million, with costs being split between Stanstead, the Provincial Government, and the town of Derby Line Vermont.
The modernization work will involve the replacement of the existing wastewater treatment system at the Rock Island sewage treatment plant. The plant includes two aeration basins, one of which will be kept in operation during the work and the other will be dismantled to house the new treatment system. Last renovated in 1980, this station is operated by the Town of Stanstead and receives wastewater from the Rock Island area and Derby
Line.
“Maintaining municipal infrastructure in all regions of Quebec is of capital importance to our government,” Laforest said. “This work, necessary for the proper functioning of water management systems, makes a real difference in the living environment of citizens in addition to contributing to Quebec’s economic recovery.”
Philippe Dutil, Mayor of Stanstead, underlined the degree to which the modernization work simply would not have been possible without this support.
The Provincial support was provided through the Programme d’infrastructures municipales d’eau (PRIMEAU), which is a part of the 2020-2030 Quebec infrastructure plan (PQI). Bélanger made a point of noting that similar projects have also recently received funding through the PRIMEAU in Magog and Eastman.
