Memphrepmagog police out on the water

- Record Staff

The Memphrepmagog police (RPM) were busy last Thursday night as Fête nationale revelers too to the waters of Lake Memphrepmagog. During an operation to check for drinking and driving that took place at the entrance to the Magog River between 5:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on June 24, the police encountered five operators of pleasure craft and personal watercraft who were under the influence of alcohol.

Assisted by ground patrol officers, the individuals arrested were then transported to the RPM police station to submit to the breathalyzer. They all failed with levels of over 80mg / 100ml. One individual also tried to escape arrest by running into Merry Point Park, and thus also faces charges of obstructing police work.

The Memphrepmagog Police are reminding boaters that they will be very present this summer on all bodies of water in their territory and that impaired driving will be particularly punished. They encourage all water users to share the space respectfully and with an awareness of noise bylaws. The police will intervene if the groupings of boats cause excessive noise that affects the peace of other boaters or residents.

Since the beginning of the summer, the patrol boats of the RPM have issued five statements of offense under the Merchant Marine Act, four statements of offense for noise complaints in Baie Verte and Baie de Magog and they have carried out a dozen alcohol checks for the drivers in addition to giving out over thirty nautical warnings.

Boaters are also reminded to respect speed limits of 70km/h on lakes and 10km/h in bays or within 100m of the shoreline.
