Hurricanes dismiss talented Hounds, stumble in provincial opener

The Swift Current K-Motel Hurricanes dismissed a talented Notre Dame Bantam Hounds team in their sixth straight win Wednesday. The Hurricanes got three goals and an assist from Jordan Wittman in a 6-1 win over the visiting Hounds.

The Hurricanes, playing their first home game since November 15, trailed 1-0 after one period before scoring six unanswered goals, four of them on the man-advantage.

Thomas Hammerton and Tristan Carey both contribute­d a goal and an assist in the win.

Blade Roh picked up the victory in goal with 22 saves on 23 shots.

Dominic Vallee also scored, while Tanner Fritzke, Parker Wall, Shayn Bissonnett­e, and Josh Dickie all added assists.

Jeremy McKenna scored the lone goal for the Bantam Hounds, who dropped to 8-10-4 in the South Sask Midget AA Hockey League. The Hurricanes remained third in the league standings with a 16-5-3 record.

The Hurricanes also opened the provincial playoffs on Thursday with a 1-1 draw against the host Regina Wild. Wittman scored the only goal with an assist from Hammerton in the first period. Jaxon Debert tied the game for Regina with a second-period power-play goal before a scoreless third period.

Game two of the two-game, total-goal series will be played Friday at 7:45 p.m. at Fairview West Arena.

The Hurricanes will be back in league action Saturday when they host the Regina Flames at 7:45 p.m. at Fairview West.

They will also host the Prairie Storm on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Credit Union iplex.
