Four gold medals for Colts in Prince Albert

-

Swift Current Comp. High School Colt/Arden wrestlers took part in their second tournament of the season as they travelled to Prince Albert to compete at the Carlton Comp. Tournament over the weekend.

13 athletes from SCCHS would compete for medals at the pooled weight, round robin, Novice/Elite event. This tournament featured most of the teams that SCCHS will battle again in late February when Regional Championships are up for grabs.

Coaches Allen Blanke and Dan Marchand felt it was im- portant to have a strong performance at this tournament to establish this young team among the other Regional competitors. The team continued the long tradition of “gritty, tough” Colt/Arden wrestling. The team’s high level of conditioning was a positive factor in several key matches at the tournament.

Gold medals were captured by the following athletes: Greg Rousseaux (Elite Boys 70 kg), Greg Gillis (Elite Boys 90 kg), Cole Kritzer (Novice Boys 62 kg), Rhett Grose (Novice Boys 72 kg).

Silver medalists include: Daylon Plewis (Elite Boys 64 kg), Seth Schmaltz (Elite Boys 83 kg), Austin Shopa (Elite Boys 90 kg), Owen Muri (Novice Boys 62 kg), Max Wellsch (Novice Boys 86 kg).

Blanke also noted the contributions of assistant coach Paul Stalder, who is an Ambrose University-Calgary student stationed in Swift Current for an internship. “His enthusiasm and strong technical knowledge has helped the team in their training.”

The Colts and Ardens will see their next tournament action on February 7-8 at Regina O’Neill High School.
