-

The Swift Current rink skipped by TeeJay Haichert had a hot start before cooling off at the 2014 Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Tisdale.

Haichert was joined by lead Allison McMillan, second Kelsey Dutton, and third Janelle Tyler. The team is coached by Ken Dutton.

Haichert scored one point in an extra end to open the tournament with a win Wednesday. Haichert, curling out of the Swift Current Curling Club, defeated Biggar’s Brett Barber 6-5 in draw one of the 12-team provin- cial championship. The two teams traded points throughout the game and Barber scored one in the 10th end to force an extra end.

Haichert moved to 2-0 Friday morning with a 7-5 win over Balgonie’s Mandy Selzer after blanking the ninth end with the ham- mer and then scoring two in the 10th end. The game got out to an exciting beginning when Haichert scored two in the first and Selzer responded with three in the second end. Selzer increased her lead to 4-2 when she stole one in the fourth before Haichert tied up the game with two in the fifth. The two rinks traded points in the seventh and eighth ends before Haichert scored the win in the final end.

She repeated the feat in the evening draw by stealing two in the 10th for a 64 win over Regina’s Lana Vey. Vey led 4-2 after five ends by Haichert scored one in the seventh, stole one in the eighth to tie the game and then blanked the ninth before stealing a pair in the 10th to remain unbeaten.

The Swift Current rink suffered its first loss on Friday morning in a 6-4 setback against Regina’s Michelle Englot. The two teams traded points throughout the first eight ends before Englot counted two in the ninth end to close the scoring.

Haichert dropped a second straight game that afternoon in an 8-5 loss to Regina’s Chantelle Eberle. Eberle stole deuces in the third and fourth ends for a 5-0 lead. Haichert responded with two in the fifth and a steal of two in the sixth to cut the deficit but Eberle closed the door with two more in the seventh to earn a three-point lead.

Saturday, Haichert rematched with Selzer in a tie-breaker and lost 6-5 when Selzer stole one in the last end. Haichert had built up a 4-1 lead after four ends but allowed singles in the fifth, sixth, and seventh ends for a 4-4 tie. She scored one in the eighth before Selzer scored singles in the ninth and 10th ends.

Stefanie Lawton defeated Englot 5-2 in the championship final Sunday to earn the right to represent Saskatchewan at the national Scotties in Montreal next month.
