Fox Valley rinks curl in Mixed Doubles Provincial­s

A pair of Fox Valley rinks took part in the 2016-2017 Mixed Doubles Provincial Curling Championsh­ip at the Saskatoon CN Curling Club on Feb. 16-19.

One team featured Donda Lee Deis and Kalin Deis, while the other was comprised of Ryan Deis and Sherry Just. The event featured a record 23 teams and one of the Fox Valley rinks was able to advance to the playoffs.

Deis and Just won all five of their round robin game to advance to the eight-team playoffs. The Deis and Just rink opened their event with a 7-5 win over Weyburn’s Ashley and Ryan Skjerdal. They faced their rival Fox Valley rink on Thursday afternoon and won 9-4.

Friday, Deis and Just opened the day against Saskatoon’s Daymond Bernath and Madison Johnson with a 9-4 win to remain unbeaten. They next faced Saskatoon’s Allison de Hoop and John Quinney and won 8-2.

They concluded the round robin on Saturday afternoon against Saskatoon’s Ashley Quick and Mike Armstrong and won 6-3 to finish unbeaten in the round robin.

Deis and Just took on St. Walburg’s Scott and Jensen Manners in the quarter-finals Sunday morning and lost 7-5. They scored two in the second end and quickly added steals of two and one to lead 5-2 after four ends. The Manners rink struck back with a single in the fifth and then steals in the final three ends.

The Deis rink finished fourth in their round robin group with two wins and three losses. They opened the event with a 2-0 win over de Hoop and Quinney. They faced their rival Fox Valley rink on Thursday afternoon and lost 9-4.

Friday, they opened the day against Quick and Armstrong and lost 10-8. They faced Bernath and Johnson on Friday afternoon and won 11-5 in seven ends.

The Deis rink concluded the round robin on Saturday against the Skjerdals and lost 11-2.
