Swift Current Comp. wrestlers came home with three medals from the SHSAA provincial championsh­ips, which were held March 17-18 in Warman. Capturing gold was Austin Shopa in the 100kg category. This is Austin’s third medal in three years. He won silver in 2015 and gold in 2016. Congrats to Austin on a great high school wrestling career!

Finishing with a silver medal was Aleah Nickel in the 56 kg category. This follows up on Aleah’s bronze last year.

Finishing with a bronze was Brock Doerksen in the 77kg category. Brock is also graduating and this is his second medal after winning gold in 2016.

Also participat­ing at provincial­s was Kayden Dudley, Michael Sisa, Remington Tschetter, Sebastian Marchand and Anders Mitchell. Congrats to the Comp. wrestling team and their coaches Allen Blanke, Daniel Marchand, and manager Tracey Martin.

Regional basketball tournament­s occurred throughout the province on March 17-18. The Southwest hosted 2A girls and 2A boys at Shaunavon.

Thanks to Shaunavon for hosting – job well done! The Shaunavon Silhouette­s had a great showing capturing the regional title and a spot at SHSAA HOOPLA. The third ranked Silhouette­s opened the tournament with a 79-53 win over Maidstone.

They met Lashburn in the final. The Silhouette­s had a substantia­l lead but the Lady Lobos chipped away and in the fourth quarter made it a tie game with less than a minute left. But with 28 seconds left, Shaunavon scored and then converted two free throws to make the final 64-60.

The Silhouette­s will now be the lone Southwest representa­tive at HOOPLA, which will be held March 24-25 in Regina. Good luck to the Silhouette­s and their coaches Tim Miller, Paige Island, and Tara Coburn!

The fifth ranked Shaunavon Shadows got off to a good start beating Norquay 68-45. This put them into the final on Saturday afternoon against a fast moving team from St. Brieux. It was a close game for the duration with the teams trading baskets and the score within five points. In the last minute, the fourth ranked St. Brieux Crusaders pulled away for a 79-67 win and a trip to HOOPLA.

At the 1A boys’ level, the fifth ranked Herbert Laurels travelled to Lake Lenore. The Laurels lost a heartbreak­er to Stoughton 66-62. They then beat Pinehouse on the consolatio­n side 72-57.

Meanwhile the 10th ranked Frontier boys competed at Rocanville at another 1A regional. Frontier suffered a 69-36 loss to Hepburn but turned around on the consolatio­n side to beat Nakoda Oyade 6250.

In 1A girls’ action, 11th ranked Herbert participat­ed at Middle Lake. They took on Hague in their first game and lost 68-53. The Laurels rebounded on the consolatio­n side with a win over Kerrobert 83-39.

At the 3A level, both Maple Creek girls and boys were ranked 11th. The lady Rebels travelled to Indian Head where they lost to Unity 68-37. They beat Kamsack on the consolatio­n side 53-48.

Meanwhile the boys were in Clavet. The Rebels lost a close game to Indian Head 71-65 and then beat Macklin on the consolatio­n side 91-87.

In 5A action, the Swift Current Ardens were ranked fourth out of six teams at the rural regional in Estevan. The Ardens got off to a great start beating Yorkton Regional 6349. This put them up against a strong team from Prince Albert Carlton. The Ardens lost to Carlton 68-54. Carlton then went on to win the tourney.

The Swift Current boys were ranked fifth out of seven teams at the rural regional held at Prince Albert. The Colts lost a close one to Estevan 69-65. They rebounded on the consolatio­n side with a win over Balgonie 56-54.
