Barracudas defend home pool at Chinook Invitational
There were a total of 51 Barracudas swimmers competing at the annual Chinook Invitational from April 1-2 held by the Swift Current Barracudas Swim Club. It also marked the highest attended meet the Barracudas have participated in this season. The swim meet was an introduction to novice swimmers who wished to get into competitive swimming.
“It was great to see this many swimmers involved in the swim meet. Their parents never get to see what their children are capable of until they get to compete in a swim meet,” explained coach Gary Cheung.
Five different swimmers combined to break a total of five club records during the two-day meet.
Leah Sletten set a new record in the 10&U Girls 50 Metre Breaststroke in 47.62 seconds. Veda Gottselig added a new record in the 11-12 Girls 200 Freestyle in 2:38.67.
Liam Rayner also set a new record in 10&U Boys 50 Breaststroke in 51.65 seconds. Evan Ewert added a new club mark in 13-14 Boys 200 Backstroke in 2:47.04. Quinn Mittelholtz rounded out the record setters in the 13-14 Boys 400 Individual Medley in 6:01.76.
In addition to all the new club records, all novice Barracudas swimmers achieved their personal best times. They were given a best time ribbon even though it was their first time competing.
“It is important to recognize these young swimmers, to encourage them to be competitive, to always strive for greatness,” said Cheung. “You just never know perhaps some of them will be able to compete in higher level in a couple more years.”
The annual Chinook Invitational was the conclusion for the Olympic way (learnto-swim) program. The competitive program will remain active while those swimmers are training toward Mansask open Championships held in Winnipeg in early July.
