Strong safety message delivered during Discover The Farm
Students from across the Southwest had an opportunity to learn a safety first message at the Discover The Farm: A Farm Facts Experience this past week.
The Swift Current Agricultural and Exhibition Association hosted the two day event on April 26 and 27, with over 500 students able to learn about agriculture, safety and animal care.
Swift Current Ag and Ex General Manager Tracey Stevenson said this continuing educational opportunity delivers a key message for all children across the Southwest.
“Some of the safety stuff we try to implement is not just for the farm, but it’s also for urban kids,” Stevenson said of the program.
The two hours sessions exposed participants to safety information, details on animal care, learning about food production, plus a series of hands on interactive displays.
“We want kids to know where do we get our food. Where do we get our milk from. Where do eggs come from,” she said.
However, the theme of safety was a consistent message through the entire event.
“We just want to continue to get that word out there of safety for the children, safety for the adults. It’s just a constant awareness, a constant reminder.”
“If they come out at Frontier Days, they can go down to the barns, and it’s just an awareness on how to act around the animals. You can’t just go up behind them and scare them.”
The 2018 event attracted a total of 547 students, with school groups attending from as far away as Val Marie, Maple Creek and Moose Jaw.
