Badminton athletes advance to provincial­s

Southwest athletes had a successful showing at the SHSAA regional badminton tournament in Moose Jaw on May 5. Teams captured the boys singles, girls doubles, boys doubles and mixed doubles categories and will also be sending two second place teams as well. Congratula­tions to all the coaches and athletes for a great effort!

The regional tournament consisted of two teams from the Southwest, two teams from South Central and two teams from West Central. The six teams played a round robin with the top two advancing to provincial­s. The results were as follows:

Girls Doubles – the team of Payton Stimson and Kyla Tumbach (Leader School) captured the regional title going 5-0 in the round robin. The girls had wins over the younger Leader team 2-1, Biggar 2-0, Central Butte 2-0, Rosetown 2-0 and Moose Jaw Peacock 2-0.

The younger Leader team of Megan Tumbach and Kerstyn Wenzel will also advance as they finished second with a record of 4-1. Their only loss was to the older Leader team. They then beat the rest of the competitor­s in straight sets.

Boys Doubles – the duo of Carson Leach and Jordan Mastel went undefeated to win the regional title with wins over Fox Valley, Beechy, Glentworth, Rosetown and Moose Jaw Central.

Sam Ganert and Ethan Bosch from Fox Valley also took part in boys doubles. They had a record of 2-3 and will not advance.

Boys Singles – both Southwest competitor­s will be advancing to provincial­s. Bobby Hudec from Fox Valley won the regional title going 5-0. Hudec had wins over Dallyn Jamieson from Cabri 2-1, Elrose 2-0, Rockglen 2-0, Rosetown 2-0 and Assiniboia 2-0. Jamieson will also advance with his record of 4-1. After his loss to Fox Valley, Jamieson beat the competitio­n in straight sets to finish second.

Mixed Doubles – the mixed duo of Matthew Ganert and Kenna Anton from Fox Valley captured the regional title with a record of 5-0. They beat the other Fox Valley team of Nicholas Ehnisz and Rebecca Chou 2-1, Eston 2-0, Moose Jaw Central 2-0, Loreburn 2-0 and Gravelbour­g 2-0. Ehnisz and Chou had a final standing of 3-2 and will not advance.

Girls Singles – the Southwest was represente­d by Cassandra Benson from Hazlet and Sara Kendall from Ponteix. Cassandra had a record of 3-2, while Sara had a record of 2-3. Both girls will not advance.

Good luck to the teams advancing to SHSAA provincial badminton in Wilkie on Saturday, May 14.

The SWAC junior district badminton championsh­ips were held in Shaunavon on May 5. Thanks to the Public School and High School for hosting. Special thanks to our commission­ers Stephen Hall, Brooke Chabot and Jaret Olesen. We had 12 teams in each category. The teams were divided into two pools of six. Top two in each pool advanced to the semi finals. The results were as follows:

Girls Singles:

Semi final #1: Gabrielle Schmidt (Val Marie) over Olivia Hudec (Fox Valley)

Semi final #2: Joren Gramlich (Burstall) over Janae Mass (Fox Valley)

Final: Joren Gramlich over Gabrielle Schmidt 2-0 (21-19, 22-20).

Boys Singles:

Semifinal #1: Kai Haubrich (Irwin) over Jasper Gian (Ponteix)

Semifinal #2: Jaxon Leach (Leader) over Micky Bradford (Cabri)

Final: Jaxon Leach over Kai Haubrich 2-1 (12-21, 21-10, 2114).

Girls Doubles:

Semifinal #1: Irish Completo/ Kyra Regier (SC Comp.) over Kelsey Klippert/haley Tumbach (Leader)

Semifinal #2: Mackenzie Mcintyre/grace Thierman (Irwin) over Daniella Palaganas/sierra Ross (Ponteix)

Final: Irish Completo/kyra Regier over Mackenzie Mcintyre/grace Thierman 2-0 (2117, 21-15).

Boys Doubles:

Semifinal #1; Ryder Jensen/ William Wold (Frontier) over Manny Grimm/rhett Petersen (Hodgeville)

Semifinal #2: Beau Cornelson/caedyn Moffit (SC Comp.) over Lachlan Humphrey/ Jaydon Scott (Eastend)

Final: Beau Cornelson/ Cadeyn Moffit over Ryder Jensen/william Wold 2-1 (15-21, 21-19, 23-21).

Mixed Doubles:

Semifinal #1: Jade Stimson/ Ty Strutt (Leader) over Volodja Gizen/eastyn Jakubowski (Leader)

Semifinal #2: Braden Brost/ Paige Tully (Consul) over Rhys O’neill/xyrale Fieji (Ponteix)

Final: Jade Stimson/ty Strutt over Braden Brost/paige Tully 2-1 (20-22, 21-16, 23-21).
