Wilson wins again in North Battleford

Southwest competitor­s continued to battle near the top of the leaderboar­d early in the Canadian Cowboys Associatio­n rodeo season at the Kinsmen Rodeo in North Battleford on April 2729.

Maple Creek’s Janae Wilson continued her strong start to 2018 with a win in Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 13.71 seconds for $319. It was her second win in as many outings this season after winning in Tisdale earlier in the month.

The Bareback event had two Southwest cowboys finish in the top four. Maple Creek’s Brady Bertram tied for top spot with 75 points on Boot Barn for $477. Consul’s Monty Koopman picked up 74 points on CC to tie for third for a $297 payday.

Two Southwest cowboys also produced top-four performanc­es in Saddle Bronc. Maple Creek’s Mike Gordon rode City Wide for 75 points to tie for second for $483. Piapot’s Casey Bertram had a 74-point ride on Roll Call to earn $315 in fourth spot.

Casey Bertram also placed second in the Saddle Bronc bonus round with 76 points for $200.

Val Marie’s Riley Hayes placed second in Steer Wrestling in 7.2 seconds for $680. He was also second in the bonus round in 5.1 seconds for $200. Hayes is the early season leader in the Steer Wrestling standings and sits third for the Canadian High Point Award.

Two Southwest cowboys finished in the money in Tie Down Roping. Waldeck’s Tuftin Mcleod was third in 10.6 seconds for $477. Swift Current’s Keith Folk placed sixth in 12.5 seconds for $125.

Tuftin and Scott Mcleod were second in Team Roping in 5.5 seconds for $1,594. Maple Creek’s Tanner Jones and Taylor Wudrich (Bow Island) tied for fifth in 6.4 seconds for $464. Jones and Wudrick tied with Scott Mcleod and Cody Getz for top spot in the bonus round in 5.8 seconds for $700.

Tuftin Mcleod now leads the Tie Down Roping and Canadian High Point Award season standings. Scott Mcleod is the top Team Roping Heeler so far this season as well.

A couple of Southwest cowgirls found the money in Ladies Barrel Racing. Mankota’s Karli Cowie was sixth in 13.75 seconds for $518 and Waldeck’s Mallory Mallert was tied for eighth in 13.79 seconds for $64.

The CCA schedule will resume on May 24-26 with rodeos in Kindersley and Mankota.
