Provincial track and field qualifying underway

The Swift Current Comp. was the site of a pair of SHSAA Section track and field meets held on May 15-16 as athletes from across the Southwest were in action.

The top-four finishers in each event advanced to the District Meet, which was scheduled for May 23 in Swift Current. The top-two finishers in each Midget, Junior, and Senior event at Districts will advance to SHSAA Provincial­s in Prince Albert on June 1-2.

The Blue Section meet was held on Tuesday with over 300 athletes in action. The three older division aggregate standings were dominated by Swift Current Comp. athletes.

The Colts’ Emmett Guider and Gull Lake’s Aiden Slade tied atop the Senior Boys standings with 30 points apiece. The Ardens’ Kalea Sauder topped the Senior Girls standings with the maximum 40 points.

Sauder set three new records at the Blue Section Meet. She establishe­d a new record of 12.32 seconds in the 80 Metre Hurdles. The grade 11 also beat the 100 Metre Dash record in 12.70 seconds and added a record in the Long Jump at 4.89 metres.

Colts’ speedster Scott Joseph also accumulate­d the maximum 40 points to top the Junior Boys Division, while the Ardens’ Maddy Mccleary stood atop the Junior Girls Division with 38 points.

Joseph establishe­d four new records at the Blue Meet, including a new record of 10.98 seconds in the 100 Metre Dash. He also set a new standard of 23.25 seconds in the 200 Metre Dash. Joseph proved that he was no one-trick pony with a new record in the Long Jump of 6.46 metres and then added the Triple Jump record at 12.71 metres.

Swift Current’s Ashley Mcdonald won the Midget Girls Division with 40 points, while teammate Rhett Vavra topped the Junior Boys Division with 38 points.

Vavra set two records, while Mcdonald added one to her resume. Vavra set the 200 Metre Dash record at 24.13 seconds and lowered the 400 Metre Dash to 56.05 seconds. Mcdonald moved the Triple Jump record to 9.90 metres.

Vanguard’s Elijah Harden finished atop the Bantam Boys aggregate standings with 30 points. The Bantam Girls competitio­n finished in a threeway tie for top spot between Wymark’s Hillary Lacelle and Jaycee Berggren and All-saints’ Paris Appel.

Lacelle set two new distance records during the meet. She ran the 1,500 Metres in 5:38.30 and the 3,000 metres in 12:54.91 to easily surpass both previous standards.

Hodgeville’s Tilynn Peterson moved the Midget Girls Discus record to 26.81 metres.

Hodgeville’s Teagan Newton added a record in the Senior Girls Javelin at 33.19 metres.

Swift Current’s Kamryn Johnson increased the Midget Girls Shot Put record to 10.66 metres.

Swift Current’s Danica Messer added a new record of 1:05.62 in the Senior Girls 400 Metre Dash.

The Colts’ Braedon Friesen destroyed the Senior Boys High Jump record when he cleared the bar at 2.03 metres.

Four new relay records were also set on Tuesday. The Colts set a new Midget Boys 4x100 record in 49.80 seconds. The Ardens set a new record in Senior Girls 4x100 in 54.22 seconds. The Gull Lake Lions set a new Senior Girls 4x400 Metre Relay record in 5:13.38. Irwin School added a record in the Bantam Boys 4x100 Metre Relay in 53.02 seconds.

The Shaunavon Shadows and Silhouette­s were the class of the White Section meet on Wednesday, which featured approximat­ely 230 athletes.

Shaunavon’s Kortlyn Fuller won the Senior Girls Division with 40 points, while teammate Lane Pritchard topped the Senior Boys aggregate standings with 38 points.

The Leader Saints had a good showing in the Junior Division. Leader’s Jackson Sitter topped the Junior Boys Division with 38 points. Leader’s Lauren Fyke and Maple Creek’s Morgan Robinson tied for top spot in Junior Girls with 28 points each.

Shaunavon’s Bryden Tremere and Maple Creek’s Sydney Murphy tied for top spot in the Midget Girls Division with 30 points each. Val Marie’s Alex Waldner picked up the win in the Midget Girls Division with 38 points.

Shaunavon’s Elizabeth Bennett added another title for the Silhouette­s with 38 points to win Bantam Girls, while Skyler Craft of Success won the Bantam Boys Division with 36 points.
