Burnham 4-H Club Report - Recapping a busy year

- JANELLE STOLHANDSKE DALE ELLIE NELSON

Members of the Burnham 4-H Club have had a busy 2017-2018 year.

We worked very hard last spring to bring the Burnham Booth at the Frontier Days up to code so we could continue to serve burgers to the Southwest. It was a monumental task and thank you for all the help to those involved. We worked a BBQ fundraiser at Cowtown and Peavey Mart this year. As well as held a Christmas Bake Sale.

The Beef project has held meetings regularly through the year. There are 10 kids in this project this year. Naomi Greenwood was helping with some of the duties. Kids have picked their steers, learned about the different parts of the animal, discussed halter breaking techniques. They are excited about watching and growing with their animals.

The Light Horse project has held regular meetings through the year. There were 14 kids in this project this year. Lyle Smith has been helping with meetings this year. The kids have enjoyed working with their horses and learning riding techniques. They are enjoying the nice weather for riding and hoping to get some trail rides in this spring.

The 4-U project has held regular meetings through the year. There were eight kids in this project this year. The kids held monthly projects that included making Ukrainian Easter eggs, making and serving a meal at Fresh Start, ice fishing, scrapbooking, pottery, and releasing pheasants. They also had one major project that will encompass multiple years – the kids worked with their bee hive. This year the kids were able to extract 150 pounds of honey and prepare it for sale, learn about bees, their importance and behaviour, spring clean a hive, and maintain their own hive (who is once again happily producing honey). We had help from FCC – Thank you! With the money they raised the kids were able to make donations as follows - $200 to the Pattison Children’s hospital, $200 to the SPCA, $200 to the Southwest Crisis Services, and $200 to adopt an elephant and a polar bear.
