Track and field athletes advance to Provincial­s

The top athletes from across the Southwest were in Swift Current on Wednesday for the District track and field meet. The top two athletes in each event in the Midget, Junior, and Senior categories advanced to Provincial­s.

Bantam athletes were also in action at the District meet and concluded with two rural champions in the aggregate standings. Vanguard’s Elijah Nicholas won the Bantam Boys Division with 26 points, while Frontier’s Myra Halderman topped the Bantam Girls standings with 30 points.

Swift Current Comp. athletes ran their way to five of the six aggregate titles in the Midget, Junior, and Senior standings. Ashley Mcdonald won all four of her events to win the Midget Girls Division with 40 points. Teammate Rhett Vavra duplicated the feat with 40 points to win the Midget Boys Division.

The Colts’ Scott Joseph continued his dominating season with 40 points to top the Junior Boys Division. Teammate Maddy Mccleary won the Junior Girls title with 38 points.

The Ardens’ Kalea Sauder won the fifth championsh­ip for the host team when she compiled 38 points to top the Senior Girls Division.

Shaunavon’s Tye Tremere picked up a win in the Senior Boys Division for the Shadows with 26 points.

The Gull Lake Lions had a strong showing in the Quadathlon during the district meet, winning three of the five titles.

The Gull Lake tandem of Sadie Keller and Ayden Lemarre won both the Bantam events. Lemarre topped the boys quad with 1,799 points, while Keller topped the girls quad with 1,422 points.

Gull Lake’s Zack Sumner won the Junior Boys Quad with 1,543 points. Swift Current’s Tiana Knight came out on top of the Junior Girls Quad with 1,608 points.

Shaunavon’s Nixon Voll topped the Senior Boys Quad with 2,395 points to return to Provincial­s.

A total of 12 records were set at the District meet by nine different athletes from seven different schools.

Joseph led the way with three new Junior Boys records. He obliterate­d the 100 Metre Dash record of 11.46 seconds when he tore down the straightaw­ay in 10.78 seconds. Joseph added another record in the 200 Metre Dash in 22.53 seconds to erase the 1992 record of 23.56 seconds. Joseph added over a metre to the Triple Jump record at 13.78 metres to better the 2016 record of 12.68 metres.

Vavra set two new Midget Boys records. He won the 200 Metre Dash in 23.62 seconds to better the 2016 record of 24.00 seconds. Vavra also lowered the 2014 record of 55.84 seconds in the 400 Metres to 55.28 seconds.

Swift Current’s Kamryn Johnson set the record in Midget Girls Shot Put. She set a new mark of 10.66 metres to sail past the 1982 record of 9.87 metres.

Consul’s Madison Howell sent her best throw 33.61 metres to top the Junior Girls Discus previous record of 33.12 metres, which had stood since 2001.

Wymark’s Hillary Lacelle establishe­d a new record of 5:29.53 in the Bantam Girls 1,500 Metres, to lower the 2015 record of 5:33.53.

Fox Valley’s Mardi Wagner sailed to an impressive new record in the Bantam Girls Triple Jump. She traveled 9.45 metres to better the 2016 record of 8.88 metres.

Frontier’s Myra Halderman added a new record in the Bantam Girls Shot Put of 9.36 metres to erase the 2016 record of 9.03 metres.

Vanguard’s Elijah Harden added a record in the Bantam Boys 1,500 Metres, moving the 2016 record from 5:13.87 to 5:06.87.

Burstall’s Joren Gramlich tied the Bantam Girls High Jump record of 1.45 metres.

The SHSAA Provincial Track and Field Championsh­ip will be held on June 1-2 in Prince Albert.
