57’s open season with three losses

The Swift Current 57’s had a rough opening week in the Western Major Baseball League with three straight losses.

Thursday, the 57’s made a few too many mistakes in a 4-3 loss to the visiting Weyburn Beavers to open the 2018 WMBL regular season.

The 57’s were held to seven hits and two walks in the game. Catcher Dauson Tate led the way with two hits and a run scored. Leadoff man Anthony Stewart and right-fielder Alex Orenczuk scored, while Jerad Dokey, Bryan Benz, and Tyler Wojciechow­ski all added runs batted in.

Friday, the 57’s had one poor inning to fall to 0-2 with a 7-1 loss in Moose Jaw. They allowed six runs in an inning before the game was called due to rain in the seventh inning. The Miller Express took a strangleho­ld of the game with a six-run third inning when they combined three hits with three walks and two hit batters. The 57’s scored in the second inning when Bo Mcclintock and Orensczuk hit back to back doubles.

Sunday, the 57’s scored the game’s opening five runs, but allowed a string of 15 consecutiv­e runs in an 18-8 loss to the host Regina Red Sox.

The 57’s scored in each of the first three innings, capped by a two-run home run from Benz.

Stewart doubled during a three-hit outing and also scored and knocked home a run. Wojciechow­ski singled twice, scored twice, and knocked one run home.

Orenczuk singled and walked, scored, and finished with two RBI. Designated hitter Jared Binsfield doubled, singled, walked, and scored a run.

The 57’s used five pitchers, including two scoreless innings from reliever Aaron Pugh. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three.

The 57’s have five games over seven days this week. They open the week with road games in Yorkton on Thursday and Friday. The 57’s will be back at home on Sunday to host the Regina Red Sox at 2:05 p.m.

The 57’s will get their first ever visit from the Fort Mcmurray Giants on Monday and then host the Okotoks Dawgs on Tuesday.
