Another 13 medals for Southwest athletes at Provincial­s

The high school sports calendar came to a close over the weekend with the Saskatchew­an High School Athletics Associatio­n Track and Field Provincial Championsh­ips in Prince Albert.

A total of 91 athletes represente­d the South West Athletic Conference and brought home 13 medals from Provincial­s to duplicate their medal count in 2017. The Southwest brought home four individual gold medals, five silver, and two bronze medals to go along with two relay medal winning performanc­es.

Leading the way were two members of the Swift Current Comp. Colts with outstandin­g individual performanc­es.

Scott Joseph improved on his two medals in 2017 with three individual medals in Prince Albert. He won the Junior Boys 100 Metres late on Friday. He edged Dalmeny’s Jayce Janzen by one one-hundredth of a second when he finished in 11.31 seconds.

Joseph added two medals on Saturday. He also won the Triple Jump when he jumped 13.22 metres to easily top the field.

Joseph added his third medal of the meet when he placed third in the 200 Metre Dash in 23.93 seconds behind Dalmeny’s Janzen (23.64) and Jordan Dasiuk (23.79).

Joseph finished second in the Junior Boys Aggregate standings with 57 points, five behind Dasiuk.

Swift Current’s Rhett Vavra added four medals of his own and topped the Midget Boys Aggregate standings with 66 points, 12 ahead of the next closest competitor. He won gold in the Midget Boys triple jump with a top jump of 12.27 metres.

The Swift Current Comp. Colts swept the top two spots in the Midget Boys Long Jump. Tyson Coward won gold with a 5.82-meter jump, while Vavra won silver when he jumped 5.76 meters.

Vavra also won silver in the 400 Metres in 56.90 seconds. He trailed only Prince Albert’s Seth Lemoal, who finished in 55.58 seconds.

Vavra added another silver medal in the 200 Metres in 24.83 seconds, just behind Calvet’s Dawson Klinger, who finished in 24.79 seconds.

Fox Valley’s Joseph Bosch added a silver medal in the Junior Boys Javelin. His throw of 47.27 metres trailed only Pierceland’s Kaleb Brunet’s effort of 49.09 metres.

Consul’s Macey Howell won a provincial medal for a second straight year. She placed second in Junior Girls Discus with a throw of 31.15 metres, only seven centimetre­s behind Wakaw’s Jaedyn Rudichuk.

Leader’s Jackson Sitter won bronze in the Junior Boys Triple Jump with a top jump of 12.40 metres.

The Southwest also won two medals in the 4x100 Metre Relays. The Junior Boys won silver in 45.84 seconds. The team was made up of Joseph (SCCHS), Jackson Sitter (Leader), Pilani Siwela (Hodgeville), and Jordan Lamontagne (SCCHS).

The Midget Boys team won bronze in 47.93 seconds. The team was comprised of Coward (SCCHS), Chase Sawchuk (Maple Creek), Vavra (SCCHS) and Kaden Floberg (Shaunavon).

The Swift Current Comp. also won the team title in the 4A school division with 462 points, well ahead of Prince Albert St. Mary’s 381 points.

RELAYS:

Junior boys 4 x 100m – silver. Team was made up of Scott Joseph (SCCHS), Jackson Sitter (Leader), Pilani Siwela (Hodgeville) and Jordan Lamontagne (SCCHS).

Midget boys 4 x 100m – bronze. Team was made up of Tyson Coward (SCCHS), Chase Sawchuk (Maple Creek), Rhett Vavra (SCCHS) and Kaden Floberg (Shaunavon).

Senior girls 4 x 100m – 8th. Team was made up of Kalea Sauder (SCCHS), Danica Messer (SCCHS), Charlene Hoffarth (Shaunavon) and Aleah Nickel (SCCHS).

Open boys 4 x 400m – 4th. Team was made up of Rhett Vavra (SCCHS), Lane Pritchard (Shaunavon), Pilani Siwela (Hodgeville) and Dalton Chalk (SCCHS).
