57’s run into tough WMBL opposition

It was a difficult week for the Swift Current 57’s as they ran into some of the top teams in the Western Major Baseball League and lost five consecutiv­e games. They finished the weekend with a 14-17 record in fourth spot in the Eastern Division.

Wednesday, the 57’s managed just a single hit in a 9-0 loss to the host Regina Red Sox.

Kyle Wilson held the 57’s to one base hit in a complete game shutout as he improved to 3-1 with a 1.87 earned run average.

Blake Adams had the only hit in the first inning and then stole second base for the 57’s.

Newcomer Isiah Campa was a bright spot on the mound with 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk with one strikeout in his 57’s debut.

Regina scored in each of the first four innings, including a four-run fourth inning to put the game well out of reach. Erik Crossman led the Red Sox with three hits as they knocked out 14 hits and took advantage of three errors.

Thursday, a three-run seventh inning was the difference as the visiting Moose Jaw Miller Express handed the 57’s a third straight loss. Ty Roseberry hit a three-run home run to lift the Miller Express to a 7-4 win to move two games ahead of the 57’s.

The 57’s were held to five hits in the loss. Adams moved to the leadoff spot and scored twice on a walk and a single. Catcher Ben Komonosky was on base with two walks, one single, and one hit by pitch and scored a run.

Spencer Koelewyn led the 57’s pitching staff with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Friday, the 57’s offensive woes continued in a 6-1 loss to the visiting Weyburn Beavers.

The 57’s were limited to just four hits, while the Beavers crushed three home runs to improve to 22-7 on the season.

Lefty Landon Mostellar improved to 2-1 as he held the 57’s to four hits, three walks, and one run while striking out four over eight innings.

The 57’s scored their only run in the sixth inning when a swinging bunt and resulting throwing error allowed Ethan Hunter to stroll into third base. Bo Mcclintock quickly singled him home.

Sunday, the losing streak stretched to five games at the hands of the WMBL leading Medicine Hat Mavericks.

Medicine Hat scored in five of their eight innings, swatting out 19 hits on their way to a 14-5 win in front of 874 fans at Athletic Park.

Adams led the 57’s with a home run as he finished twofor-five with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Nick Canas, Myles Miller, and Jerad Dokey also had two-hit afternoons in a losing cause.
