-

The Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park will be the location for the South Saskatchewan Open Water Classic, an open water test event in preparation for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games. In partnership with the Swift Current Barracudas swim club, the 2019 WCSG Host Society are completing the final details for the event being held July 15.

“All of our test events planned this summer will assist us with pre-planning and execution experience leading up to the Games next August”, explained Denise Barbier, Games Manager. “These will be practise runs in terms of logistics, set up, volunteers and coordination.”

As a new sport to the southwest region, residents are encouraged to visit Saskatchewan Landing on July 15 beginning at 9:30 a.m. to watch and learn about the races.

Race specifications for the July 15 event are as follows;

• 1500 m race – ages 12 & up, through to Masters

• 3000 m race – ages 14 & up, through to Masters

“This is really exciting for us to be a part of,” Ken Duncalfe, president of the SC Barracudas club said. “There hasn’t been an open water swim competition held in Saskatchewan for at least 25 years. This will be a great experience for our swimmers and club volunteers to be involved in.”

As part of the legacy that the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will be leaving, a FINA level Open Water official will be in attendance to train local officials in Open Water swim.
