57’s three-peat attempt ends in Regina
The Swift Current 57’s twoyear reign atop the Western Major Baseball League came to an abrupt conclusion when they were eliminated by the Regina Red Sox in the opening round of the playoffs.
Tuesday, the 57’s lost an error filled series opener 9-6. The Red Sox slugged three home runs as they defeated the host 57’s to open the bestof-five Eastern Division semifinal series. The 57’s made a spirited comeback attempt, but made too many mistakes in the field to defeat the Red Sox as they were held to six hits.
Regina scored runs in four of the first five innings, including a three-run third inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The 57’s took advantage of Regina errors to score twice in the third, fifth, and seventh innings to tie the game 6-6 after seven innings.
Regina’s Brooks Stotler hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to restore the lead and the Red Sox added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Wednesday, the 57’s tied up the series with a 7-5 win over the visiting Red Sox. The game featured four errors by each team as the 57’s tied the series at one game apiece.
Lead-off man Blake Adams and nine-hole hitter Jared Dokey each finished with two hits, one run scored, and one run batted in for the 57’s.
The 57’s took advantage of a Regina error to score five runs in the second inning. Regina took advantage of some mistakes to tie the game with three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Ruben Rodriquez brought home Nick Canas in the sixth to restore a 6-5 Swift Current lead. The 57’s added an insurance run in the seventh when Ben Komonosky walked and came around to score on an error.
Starter Joey Machado allowed three hits, three walks, and three runs, only one that was earned, over five innings.
Keil Krumwiede got the save with two scoreless innings to close things out.
Thursday, the 57’s erased a 7-0 deficit but lost 10-9 in extra innings to the host Red Sox.
The 57’s fell behind 7-0, scored the next nine runs to take a lead in the ninth inning, but then allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.
The 57’s loaded the bases in the 10th inning but could not score and then Adam De La Cruz scored on a fielder’s choice to clinch the win for Regina.
The 57’s fell behind in the third inning when the Red Sox scored four runs, capped by a two-out grand slam from Matt Deneau. The Red Sox added to the lead with two runs in the fourth inning to make it 7-0.
The 57’s responded wit three runs in the fifth inning when Krumwiede hit a three-run home run. They inched closer with two runs in the eighth inning and then scored four runs in the ninth to take a brief lead.
The season came to an end on Friday in Regina in 4-3 loss in walk-off fashion as the Red Sox finished with eight wins in 10 games against the 57’s this season.
The 57’s scored the opening run when Adams doubled and scored on a Canas single in the third inning. Regina tied the game in the sixth inning when Jashua Jones doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly.
The 57’s regained the lead in the eighth inning when Dokey hit a two-out single to plate Miller. Regina took the lead in the bottom of the inning when a wild pitch hit the umpire and allowed two Regina runners to score.
The 57’s tied the game in the top of the ninth inning when Miller singled home Adams, who had been hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
The game was delayed by severe weather in the bottom of the ninth, tied 3-3. When the game resumed Jones singled home Samuel De La Cruz for the series-clinching walk-off run.
Brock Gilliam allowed only one run over six innings in the start for the 57’s.
Regina starter Kyle Wilson held the 57’s to two runs over 7.1 innings in front of 510 fans at Currie Field.
