Broncos drop four straight against BC Division opponents

The Swift Current Broncos lost the opening four games of their five-game BC Division road swing.

Joel Hofer made 65 saves in a losing effort as the Broncos opened their road trip with a 6-2 loss to the host Vancouver Giants on Tuesday.

Tanner Nagel notched his first goal of the season in the second period to cut the deficit to 3-1. Ben King scored with 54 seconds remaining in regulation for his first Western Hockey League goal.

Wednesday, the Broncos ran into another of the top ranked teams in the country and lost 5-2 to the Victoria Royals.

Import Joona Kiviniemi scored his first WHL goal in the first period to tie the game 1-1. Owen Blocker scored his first of the season midway through the second period to cut the deficit to 4-2. Isaac Poulter took the loss with 30 saves on 35 shots.

The Royals got goals from D-jay Jerome, Tanner Sidaway, Brandon Cutler, and Kaid Oliver and 10 saves from Brock Gould.

Friday, the Broncos let a pair of leads slip through their fingertips to remain winless on their BC Division road trip with a 5-3 loss to the host Kamloops Blazers.

The Broncos had led twice on goals from Alec Zawatsky and Kiviniemi, but Connar Zary and Smith scored to tie the game each time.

Zane Franklin gave the Blazers the lead early in the third period, but Max Patterson scored to tie the game.

Hofer took the loss with 35 saves, while Dylan Ferguson earned the win with 21 saves.

Sunday, the Bronco were tied 1-1 in the second period before the Prince George Cougars scored twice to defeat them 3-1.

Nagel scored the lone goal, while Hofer made 26 saves in the loss.

The Broncos will play their first home game in 15 days on Saturday when they host the Everett Silvertips in a rematch of the 2018 WHL Championsh­ip series. They also visit the Regina Pats on Sunday and host the Kootenay Ice on Tuesday.
