Deis finishes second in Saskatchew­an Player’s Championsh­ip

The Swift Current Curling Club was busy this past weekend with 16 men’s curling teams on the ice for the 2019 Saskatchew­an Player’s Championsh­ip.

One Southwest rink, skipped by Fox Valley’s Ryan Deis, made it all the way to the final before placing second. Ryan Deis was joined by third Scott Manners, second Jason Barnhart, and lead Kalin Deis.

Deis won his opener 5-4 over Langenburg’s Jeff Hartung in the second draw on Friday.

They were knocked from the A Event in a 4-2 loss to Saskatoon’s Kody Hartung later that evening.

Deis rebounded in the B Event with a 6-3 win over Team Virtue out of Kerrobert.

They took on Regina’s Mike Armstrong on Saturday evening and scored points in five of six ends in a 9-1 win to reach the playoffs.

The Fox Valley rink opened the playoffs on Sunday morning with a 5-4 win over Wadena’s Scott Comfort. They faced Estevan’s Brent Gedak in the semi-final and won 7-5 after scoring three points in the fourth end and two more in the sixth to take control of the game.

Deis faced Langenburg’s Team Hartung in the final and lost 5-3 to place second out of 16 teams.

Swift Current’s Chris Haichert was also in action on Team Gedak out of Estevan.

They won their opener 7-4 over Saskatoon’s Carson Ackerman in draw two on Friday.

Gedak followed up with a 6-2 win over Kerrorbert’s Brock Virtue on the Friday evening draw.

They lost 5-4 to Saskatoon’s Kody Hartung on Saturday afternoon to drop to the B event. The Gedak rink lost again on Saturday in a 6-5 setback against Comfort.

They rebounded in a late night 4-1 win over Saskatoon’s Michael Carss.

The Estevan rink opened the playoff on Sunday with a 7-2 win over Kerrobert’s Joshua Heidt before losing to Ryan Deis in the semi-final.

Cabri’s Shaun Meachem played third for Team Kalthoff, who were playing out of the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon.

They opened the event on Friday afternoon with a 5-4 loss to Carss.

They were knocked out of the B event with an 8-7 loss to Team Comfort on Friday evening.

Kalthoff opened the C Event with a 6-4 win over Team Fell from the Twin Rivers Curling Club and then followed up with a 7-3 win over Virtue. They were eliminated from the C Event with a 5-4 loss to Regina’s Shawn Meyer in the final draw on Saturday evening.

Shaunavon was the also site of the 2018-19 Viterra Women’s Last Chance Qualifier over the weekend.

One local rink was in action, featuring skip Wendy Thienes, third Bobbi Fuller, second Della Moffat, and lead Shelly Rhodes.

Thienes won her opener 9-8 over Estevan’s Rae Williamson on Friday afternoon. They were bounced from the A Event evening in an 11-1 loss to Carlyle’s Candace Chisholm.

Thienes lost in the B event 8-5 to Weyburn’s Ashley Becker on Saturday morning to conclude the weekend.
