Broncos drop three straight on the road

The Swift Current Broncos lost all three games last week during a four-day Alberta road swing.

Wednesday, it was a memorable Western Hockey League debut for Caleb Wyrostok, but the Broncos lost 3-1 to the host Edmonton Oil Kings. Wyrostok scored in his first WHL game, a head-turning effort that was named WHL Highlight of the Night. The Medicine Hat native has 21 points and 69 penalty minutes in 13 games with the Northern Alberta X-treme Prep this season. He was a ninth round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

Jake Neighbours, David Kope, and Riley Sawchuk all scored for the Oil Kings.

Isaac Poulter took the loss with 31 saves on 33 shots. Todd Scott made 15 saves in the win.

Friday, the Broncos lost the rematch 5-1 in Edmonton. Hendrik de Klerk scored the only goal in the second period, his second career goal. Poulter took the loss with 38 saves on 43 shots.

Ethan Mcindoe, Carter Souch, Dylan Guenther, Matthew Robertson, and Keagon Slaney all scored for the Oil Kings. Sebastian Cossa earned the win with 25 saves.

Saturday, the Broncos lost 3-1 to the host Red Deer Rebels. Tyler Smithies scored the only goal on the power play in the second period to tie the game. Poulter took the loss with 29 saves.

Zak Smith, Cameron Hausinger, and Josh Tarzwell scored for the Rebels, who also got 19 saves from Byron Fancy.

The Broncos entered the holiday break with a 6-22-1-2 record after losing their ninth game in a row. They are currently enjoying a 12-day break for the holidays. They will return to action on Dec. 27 when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers.
