SWAC basketball leagues off and running

In the SWAC senior basketball league, Frontier boys hosted Maple Creek boys and won 74-63. Top scorer from Frontier was Kyle Anderson with 39 points. Top scorer from Maple Creek was Sonny Lewis with 27 points.

The Swift Current Comp. Junior Colts were on the road and defeated Shaunavon 78-69. Top scorers in the game were Andrei Dimaano (SCCHS) with 32 points and Codee Smith (Shaunavon) with 24 points.

The Shaunavon Silhouette­s won 48-38 at home over the SCCHS Junior Ardens. Top scorers for the game were Bryden Tremere from Shaunavon with 12 points. Marivic Gonzales and Rielle Klassen each had 10 points for Swift Current. The Herbert Laurels (Shyler Chartier, 19 points) defeated Maple Creek girls (Logan Resch, 21 points) by a score of 61-50.

The two co-ed basketball teams in the league, Vanguard and Gull Lake had their first meeting. Gull Lake came away with an exciting 58-56 win. Ian Mittleholt­z (Gull Lake) had 41 points and Chet Reddekopp had 17 points for Vanguard.

The Shaunavon Silhouette­s lead the Senior Girls League with a 2-0 record, followed by Herbert and Swift Current at 1-1 and Maple Creek at 0-2.

Shaunavon’s Bryden Tremere leads the league with 17 points per game, followed by Maple Creek’s Logan Resch at 16 PPG. Herbert’s Tilynn Peterson is third with 14 PPG.

The Frontier Raiders and SCCHS Junior Colts lead the SWAC Boys Senior League with 2-0 records. Shaunavon and Gull Lake are both 1-1, while Vanguard and Maple Creek are both 0-2.

Gull Lake’s Ian Mittleholt­z leads the league with 35.5 PPG, followed by Frontier’s Kyle Anderson at 35 PPG and Shaunavon’s Cody Smith at 34 PPG.

Senior league games scheduled in the New Year are Swift Current hosting Maple Creek girls/boys, Frontier boys are in Gull Lake to play the coed team, Shaunavon girls host Herbert girls, and Vanguard coed hosts the Shaunavon boys. These games are scheduled for Tuesday, January 7.

In week two of junior basketball, the Swift Current gr 9 Colts and Ardens traveled to Shaunavon for a double header. The Colts defeated the Shadows (79-30) and the Shaunavon Silhouette­s fell to the Ardens (3822). The Waldeck girls versus Maple Creek girls game will be reschedule­d in the new year.

Junior games on Thursday, January 9 have the Maple Creek girls/boys hosting the Shaunavon Shadows and Silhouette­s. Swift Current gr 9 Colts will be in Wymark and Waldeck hosts the Swift Current gr 9 Ardens.

Curling playoff dates/sites have been decided. Please note, sometimes these playoffs can be run after school (if entries are small enough). Check with your schools for finals dates.

Junior curling sectionals take place on February 7-8 (Cypress Hills in Maple Creek, Rolling Hills in SC, Whitemud in Val Marie). Junior SWAC district championsh­ip is on February 28/29 in Eastend/consul.

For our senior teams, sectional playoffs are January 31 - February 1 (Cypress Hills in Hazlet, Rolling Hills in Gull Lake and Whitemud in Shaunavon). Senior SWAC districts are February 7-8 in Leader.
