Locals reach playoffs at Players Championsh­ip

Both local rinks advanced to the playoffs at the SCT Players Championsh­ip in Swift Current over the weekend.

A rink skipped by Cabri’s Shaun Meachem, playing out of the host Swift Current Curling Club, made it to the semi-final of the 16-team event.

Meachem was joined by lead Jared Latos, second Brayden Stewart, and third Brady Scharback.

They opened the event with a 7-2 win in five ends over Saskatoon’s Michael Carss. Meachem was bounced from the A Event on Friday evening in a 5-3 loss to Regina’s Shane Vollman.

They also lost 7-2 to Estevan’s Brent Gedak on Saturday morning to fall to the C Event.

Meachem opened the C Event with a 6-1 win over Regina’s Ben Gamble and then defeated Carss 6-5 to reach the playoffs.

Meachem opened the playoffs with an 8-5 win over Saskatoon’s Bruce Korte on Sunday morning. His run came to an end with a 7-6 loss to Gedak in the semifinal.

A Fox Valley rink skipped by Ryan Deis won its first three games to advance to the championsh­ip event as well.

The Deis rink was comprised of lead Kalin Deis, second Jason Barnhart, third

Scott Manners, and fourth Ryan Deis.

The Fox Valley rink won their opener 7-4 over Kerrobert’s Brad Heidt on Friday evening. They added a 6-5 win over

Saskatoon’s Jason Jacobson in the late draw.

They added a 4-3 win to Kerrobert’s Josh Heidt on Saturday afternoon to go straight to the playoffs.

Deis was bounced from the championsh­ip event with a 7-3 loss to Regina’s Steve Howard.
