Broncos end losing streak

The Swift Current Broncos ended an eight-game losing streak last week with a convincing win in Moose Jaw.

Wednesday, the Broncos led 2-0 before allowing four consecutiv­e goals in a 5-3 loss to the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Broncos were outshot 19-6 in the first period but led 1-0 when Sam Mcginley scored on their first shot of the game at the 6:41 mark.

The Broncos added to their lead 2:11 into the second period when Eric Houk converted a rebound for his third of the season.

Edmonton got on the board midway through the second period when Riley Sawchuk pitchforke­d the puck and Isaiah Dilaura into the net. The Oil Kings tied the game late in the period when Carter Souch went between his legs from in tight for his 14th goal.

Defenseman Matthew Robertson snapped home a goal 20 seconds in the third period to give the Oil Kings their first lead. Vladimir Alistrov quickly gave the Oil Kings a two-goal lead before Jaxan Kaluski scored to put the Broncos within one goal. Scott Atkinson scored in the final minutes to clinch the win for the Oil Kings.

Dilaura took the loss despite making 57 saves to fall to 4–5-0-2. Beck Warm made 21 saves to improve to 13-14-3-1.

Friday, the Broncos had little to no puck luck in a 5-2 loss to the visiting Warriors.

Each team fired 16 shots on goal in the opening period but the Warriors put the game out of reach with goals from Martin Lang, Owen Hardy, and Cayde Augustine.

The Broncos threatened to make a game of it in the middle stanza when Matthew Benson jumped into the rush and scored his third goal of the season. Call-ups Jagger Firkus and Atley Calvert each notched their first WHL goals over a 3:16 span late in the period for a 5-1 Moose Jaw lead.

Kaleb Bulych added a power play goal in the final minute of regulation for the Broncos to close the scoring.

Isaac Poulter made 40 saves to fall to 8-20-1-2. Boston Bilous improved to 16-13–4-1 with 40 saves for the Warriors.

Saturday, the Broncos ended an eight-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the host Warriors. The Broncos won the special teams battle with three power play goals and a shorthande­d marker as well.

Captain Jaxan Kaluski led the Broncos with a hat trick as they finished three-for-five on the man-advantage. D-jay Jerome added a goal and three assists, while Benson finished with three assists. Houk scored a shorthande­d goal during a two-point outing, while Sergei Alkhimov also found the back of the net.

Poulter made 32 saves for his ninth win of the season. Poulter led all WHL goaltender­s with 1,202 saves this season.

Ryder Korczak scored twice during a three-point outing for the Warriors. Lang also scored during his own three-point performanc­e. Bilous took the loss with 27 saves.

The Broncos improved to 10-31-1-3, while the Warriors were just two points ahead of them at 1229-2-0.

The Broncos are back at home this weekend to host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday and the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.

The Broncos are 1-2 against the Tigers this season and have lost both head-to-head meetings against the Raiders.
