There were no SWAC activities planned during the February break, but our winter sports (basketball, curling, wrestling) will pick up as soon as school resumes. Badminton practices have also begun in some of our schools.

After the February break, curling playoffs will be in full swing. Junior SWAC district curling takes place on February 28-29. Eastend will host the boys and open categories, Consul hosts the girl’s competitio­n. Draws will be posted on SWAC Sports social media.

That same weekend, the SHSAA sixteam regional competitio­ns will be held for qualifying senior teams. Rosetown hosts the girls/mixed with Fox Valley girls, SCCHS mixed, and Maple Creek mixed attending. Outlook will host the boy’s championsh­ip with SCCHS boys and Hazlet boys attending. The top two teams from Regionals advance to the SHSAA provincial finals.

Junior basketball league semifinals will take place next week. #4 Maple Creek girls will visit #1 Waldeck and #3 Shaunavon Silhouette­s will travel to #2 Swift Current.

The #4 Shaunavon Shadows will visit #1 Herbert and #3 Maple Creek will pay a visit to #2 Swift Current in the boys playoffs. The finals are slated for Thursday, February 27.

Results from the SWAC senior basketball league semifinal girls’ games prior to the break: #4 Maple Creek Rebelles (Morgan Bock 10 points) lost to the #1 Shaunavon Silhouette­s (Hannah Piquette 18 pts), #3 Herbert Laurels (Shyler Chartier 13 pts) lost to #2 SCCHS Ardens (Marivic Gonzales 22 pts).

In the boys’ semifinals: #4 Gull Lake Lions (Ian Mittelholt­z 21 pts) lost to #1 SCCHS Colts (Brenden Ljunggren 18 pts) and #2 Frontier (Kyle Anderson 26 pts) lost to #3 Shaunavon Shadows (Solomon Petinrin/codee Smith 29 pts).

The senior league final will take place on Tuesday, February 25. It comes down to a battle between two schools (Shaunavon and SCCHS). The Shaunavon Silhouette­s host the SCCHS Ardens in the girls senior league final. The SCCHS Junior Colts host the Shaunavon Shadows in the boys senior league final.

Senior basketball teams will begin their run at the SHSAA Provincial Championsh­ip (HOOPLA) on March 6-7. Girls’ and boys’ teams will be participat­ing in the first level of provincial competitio­n (Conference playoffs).

Wrestling Rural Regionals take place on Saturday, February 29 at Prince Albert St. Mary. Athletes from the SCCHS and Ponteix wrestling teams will be taking part. Top finishers there advance to the SHSAA Provincial Championsh­ip.
