Growing list of event cancellations is impacting calendar dates into this fall
There has been a growing list of event cancellations across the Southwest as a result of the uncertainty resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Windscape Kite Festival and Long Day’s Night Music Festival has been cancelled for 2020, and work has already begun on the 2021 event which will be held on June 17 to 20, 2021. It marks the first time a music festival has not been held in Swift Current since Long Day’s Night began in 2003, and the first cancellation since the start of Windscape in 2005.
The 2020 edition of The Great Southwest Shakespeare
Festival has been postponed until July 2021. After a successful debut this past summer, the second summer of Shakespeare in Riverside Park will not be held this August in response to the possible effects of
COVID-19 on audiences, artists, board, staff and volunteers.
This cancellation comes on the heels of the previously announced postponement of all events at the Lyric Theatre for the foreseeable future. One of their first cancellations was the world premier of Burn Rubber, Dolly! by local playwright Wendy Lockman and directed by Gordon Mccall.
The final three performances of the 20192020 season of the Swift Current Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan series were also cancelled. The cancelled concerts were Terry Barber presenting the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber on April 22, plus the season finale concert by The
Fitzgeralds on May 5.
Innovation Credit Union has postponed their annual Picnic In The Park for a year, with the family-friendly June event resuming in 2021.
All Saskatchewan Provincial Parks are currently closed and the province has announced the delay of the start of the camping season until further notice. Additionally, the province has delayed the launch of the on-line campsite reservation system. Any camping updates will be posted at www.saskparks.com.
The committee of the Maple Creek Cowboy Poetry and Western Art & Gear show have already decided to cancel their gathering which was set for September 18 to 20.
