Council awards contract for Friesen Street Storm Rehabilitation project
Work will begin in the spring on the Friesen Street Storm Rehabilitation project after Swift Current City Council approved funding for the project at their final council meeting of 2020.
City Council awarded the construction contract to KMS Construction Ltd. of Tuxford for a total amount of $1.649 million, in addition to approving a construction management contract for $98,000 to ensure the project is completed properly.
The total $1.747 million project cost will be covered entirely by a Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP) 2020 grant. Council had originally applied for funding on a project project cost of $2.3 million, with $2.19 million coming from the MEEP funding and the remaining $108,533 was to be covered by the City. With the final contract coming in under budget, the city’s $108,000 is not needed for the project, and the remaining MEEP funding can be reallocated to another approved project this year.
The project will involve the decommissioning of old storm drains, which are running under private property, by filling them with concrete. As it is prohibitive to dig up the old storm drains and put new pipe in ground, the project will also involve the rerouting of new lines entirely on public property.
KMS Construction Ltd. has completed numerous projects throughout the community, having been involved in some of the work in the Highland subdivision and the Springs area construction, and most recently delivered the South Munro Industrial project.
Construction is scheduled to begin in May and be completed by August.
