Swift Current Innovation Credit Union Wildcats’ defenseman Kamryn Johnson will be taking her hockey career to La Belle Province next season.

The 5’10’’ homegrown product recently signed a letter of intent to join the Bishop’s University Gaiters for the 2021-22 season. Bishop’s University is an english university located in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Johnson is considering study biochemistry or pre-med next year.

“My goal was always to try and play university hockey somewhere that fit right academically too. Another thing that I really wanted, if possible, was to stay in Canada and play that CIS/U Sports league. So when Bishop’s came as an opportunity it kind of seemed perfect. I’ve been to Montreal, I love the area, and then also they have the programs I want to take and they have a good program going hockey-wise as well,” said Johnson.

Finding a spot to play during a global pandemic was no easy feat.

“This year looked a lot different when it came to recruiting. Because of covid coaches weren’t able to see us on the ice and then also because a bunch of girls get an extra year of eligibility for the following year, so there wasn’t a lot of spots opening up and it was really tough. I had to do a lot of putting myself out there. I did a lot with my dad regarding video and getting clips to coaches and stuff like that.”

Johnson, 17, is currently in her third season with the Wildcats in the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League. She suited up for four games with the Wildcats in 2017-18 before joining the team full time the following season. She finished with a goal, an assist, and 10 penalty minutes in 28 games in 2018-19. Johnson registered three assists and 30 penalty minutes in 30 games in 2019-20.

“Kamryn is very reliable defensively,” said Wildcats head coach Terry Pavely. “She has made a commitment to making sure she takes care of her defensive responsibilities first. She uses her stick, and her reach, effectively to help her defend. She has a very good shot, becoming an offensive threat in the offensive zone, especially on the powerplay.
