ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
DECEMBER Camden Weatherbee ~ Softball Junior Male Individual Athlete
Camden recently won bronze as a member of the Canadian team at the World Baseball Softball Congress Pan-Am qualifier in Sincelejo, Colombia, and at the U18 men’s World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico. Camden’s performance at both tournaments, batting .286 with eight runs batted in, helped secure Canada’s spot at the 2023 World Cup and move up the world rankings to third place in men’s fastpitch.
Mason Smith ~ Goalball Senior Male Individual Athlete
In November, Mason won bronze as part of the Canadian men’s goalball team at the Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile. His offensive and defensive play contributed hugely to the team’s success, with Mason tied as the third-highest male scorer in the competition with 14 goals. Mason has repeatedly represented Nova Scotia, winning medals at local, regional, national, and international tournament.
JANUARY Julie Nolan-McCarthy ~ Swimming Junior Female Individual Athlete
Julie competed at the 2023 Ontario Junior International Swim Meet in Toronto in December. With 60 competitors in her event, she finished seventh in the 200-metre breaststroke and 10th in the 100m breaststroke. She set new Nova Scotian records in her age group for the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke. Julie adds this to her list of accomplishments as a nationally qualified swimmer who earned several medals at last year’s Eastern Canadian championships.
Jacob Cote ~ Figure Skating Junior Male Individual Athlete
Jacob competed at the Skate Canada Challenge in Winnipeg in December. He finished 17th with 125.51 points in the competition. With his results in the Skate Canada Challenge, Jacob has qualified to compete at the upcoming national championships in Calgary.
FEBRUARY Jacob Cote ~ Figure Skating Junior Male Individual Athlete
Jacob competed at the Skate Canada National Championships in Calgary in January. He finished 15th in the junior men’s category with 120.76 points. Jacobs adds this accomplishment to his many others, including being the Nova Scotia junior men’s champions.
Tarah Sawler ~ Goalball Senior Female Individual Athlete
Tarah won a silver medal as part of Team Nova Scotia at the annual Montreal Open goalball tournament in January. She scored 10 goals throughout the tournament, ranking her fourth among female goal scorers. With her performance at the tournament, Tarah has been invited to attend tryouts for the Canadian Women’s Goalball Team.
Rowan Durning ~ Freestyle Skiing Senior Male Individual Athlete
Rowan competed at the 2023-24 Canada Cup in Sun Peaks Resort, British Columbia, in January. He had a personal best finish in the competition, placing second in Big Air and third in Slopestyle out of 85 competitors in the events. Rowan’s performance at this event places him higher in the overall Big Air standings and will help his placement for the NorAm Tour, in the United States, later this year.
