You won’t believe your eyes…

When it comes to realising VR at its truest potential, the Facebook-funded Oculus Rift and Sony’s PlayStation VR are the frontrunners. The battle between the two is a close one, with both models showing off some serious hardware chops alongside strong game line-ups and potential future development.

Elsewhere, the HTC Vive offers some decent hardware specs, plus a unique and robust, games-centric OS in Steam, but its planned ‘limited run’ makes it more of a niche collector’s item at the moment. Though the Microsoft HoloLens’s semi-augmented display makes it something of a curio, its potential – especially as an educational tool – is huge.

For T3, the PlayStation VR takes the crown, but only just – Oculus is definitely snapping at its heels. Sony currently offers a richer audio system than Oculus, and its crisp OLED screen has improved considerably in the last 18 months. Some may argue that the closed nature of the PlayStation 4 will limit the PS VR when compared to the open-development nature of the PC, but Sony’s considerable experience in gaming is already paying dividends.
