what do those swanky coffee names actuall y mean?

-

01 Americano

A great low-calorie pick, especially when drunk without milk, an Americano is onethird espresso and two-thirds hot water. It’s the espressomachine equivalent to filter coffee, although the way it’s made is really quite different.

02 Cappuccino

Want to have a crack at the classic? A cappuccino is made using one-third espresso, onethird steamed milk and one-third velvety milk microfilm on top. It may seem old-fashioned next to a soy latte, but it also gets you a stronger coffee flavour.

03 Fl at white

The trendy little brother of the cappuccino, the flat white is very similar but trades the plain steamed milk for more milk foam. (it’s two-thirds microfoam, onethird espresso). You need some chops to perfect this one, but it’s ultra-smooth if you get it right.

04 Latt e

The milkiest of milky coffees, the latte is made of one-quarter espresso to three-quarters milk. You’ll often top it off with a wee bit of fluffy foam, too. This is the drink for those who love a warm, milky taste more than the harder hit of raw coffee.

05 Latt e Macchiato

The kinda confusing brother to the latte, the latte macchiato involves putting the milk in first, then the espresso, then the foam. This gives the drink a bitter start, then a sweet finish, because the espresso isn’t fully blended with the milk. Don’t stir this one, obviously. Whichever of these coffee types you adopt as your favourite, it’s probably fair to say that you’ll never go back to your bad old instant-coffee ways.
