Gyms, if you have the motivation, are a great place to sculpt your body into the form you’ve always wanted, but we don’t always have the time to devote to the treadmill or free-weights corner. So it’s no surprise to see a boom in fitness apps focused around homebased workout routines, and one of the latest, Freeletics, is aiming to break away from the pack with its focus on instruction and support.

The app comes in two forms – a free version that includes all the main facilities you need to track your bodyweight and fitness levels, and a premium subscription that adds a real-life personal trainer who tailors your workout plan, conducts fitness tests and offers general advice.

At £24.99, £44.99 and £59.99 for three-, six- and 12-month subs, the premium service is a little pricey, but the prospect of having someone tailor a non-gym workout routine to suit your body type, behaviours and free time does appeal.

The free options are more than useful, though. The focus on bespoke how-to videos (which also include slow-mo versions to help you nail that all-important form) save you trawling YouTube, and its decision to use only exercises that use your own body weight for resistance removes the need for weights and a bench.
