While having cats is great, it does add extra stress when you go away for a weekend, leaving them to fend for themselves. Will they know to eat from their automatic feeder? Will they understand that the new ceramic water fountain isn’t a fancy cat bidet? Probably, but thanks to Motorola’s Wi-Fi Pet Video Camera, I can now rest assured they’re going to be OK by monitoring them remotely.

While the camera resembles a slightly oversized webcam, it doesn’t look out of place on a coffee table or desk. For the price, it’s an impressively solid build with modern styling. Set-up is simple: you just plug the camera in and switch it on. You’ll also need to download the Hubble Motorola Monitors smartphone app and sync via Bluetooth. This provides control over the camera, and facilitates a secure connection to your home network. When choosing an appropriate spot for the camera, I had to consider its vicinity to my home router, as lag was a bit of an issue while remote panning or zooming over a distance. While the quality of the live feed was a little lower than expected, the ability to pan and zoom is very novel and provides a sense of control over my home, even when absent.

While there are better pet cams out there, this one offers peace of mind for a very affordable price warren brown , digital art editor
