The best apps for working and playing on your smartphone

Voice memos, photos, documents you’ve been sent, ideas you’ve written down – all this digital data tends to end up on your phone in disparate apps, making it hard to find your stuff later. Classic apps like Evernote help you to organise your digital scribblings into a more convenient location, but there are more visually pleasing options out there.

Notebook is one of the most attractive alternatives we’ve found. You create Notebooks relating to different subjects, and within those you have Note Cards. These can be any sort of file – text, image, audio, video, checklist or sketch. You simply group the Note Cards by pinching them together, and once they’re grouped you can flick through them. Likewise, to ungroup them you just un-pinch. Notebooks sync across all your devices with a free Zoho account, so they’re always backed up to the cloud.

We like Notebook not just for its aesthetics, but because there’s all sorts of good stuff baked in. For example, audio notes are text-searchable automatically, and it also works seamlessly with an Apple Watch, so you can scribble notes on your wearable and then add them to your Notebooks. You can even lock individual notes using the TouchID on an iPhone.
