If you’ve installed a smart thermostat, you’ll know just what a gamechanger it is, enabling you to control your home’s temperature with a press of your smartphone screen. But a smart thermostat – clever as it may be – isn’t enough to properly heat your home; what you really need are smart radiator valves.

Now, we know this doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that T3 would normally rave about, but bear with us – it’s very worth it. A thermostat on its own can only control the level of heating based on where it’s located; if that’s your lounge it’ll set the heating level based on the temperature of this area. Of course, any room away from the thermostat’s location will be a different temperature, so they may be either be too hot or too cold.

This is where the power of Tado’s Smart Radiator Thermostat comes into play. What this little device enables you to do is control the heating for individual radiators around the home, allowing you to tailor the heating for each room. It’s called zoning, where you create different heating setups for specific parts of your home. So if, for example, your attic room gets scorching hot when the heating comes on; rather than turn the radiator off each time, you can just set the temperature you’d like and the smart valve will take care of the rest. The obvious benefit is better comfort levels throughout the home, but a more efficient heating system will also cost less to run, so you’ll make a saving.

Completing Tado’s smart heating ecosystem is the Tado Smart Thermostat, and along with the Tado app downloaded to your phone you can set up individual heating zones around the home for each thermostat. The app enables you to manually control each one, create individual schedules and use Tado’s Home and Away function to more accurately control the heating based on whether you’re in the house or not.

You can install as many Tado Smart Radiator Thermostats as you like; it costs £179 for the starter kit (which gets you two radiator thermostats) or £59 per thermostat, while the Tado Smart Thermostat costs £199.
