Nice camera. What’s the story?

Oh boy, do we have a treat for all you smartphone camera fanatics! Canon has designed its new DSLR especially for you. Yes, the EOS 200D sports intuitive controls and a touchscreen reminiscent of that on your smartphone – ideal for those transitioning to a meatier camera.

How meaty? I don’t want to lug around anything heavy.

And you won’t – Canon reckons the EOS 200D is now the lightest DSLR in the world. The black edition (it also comes in white and silver) weighs 453g, including battery and card. So you can take it on holidays and to parties without feeling like you’re carrying a brick.

Will it take good pics?

Yep. Canon’s designed this shooter to capture 24.2MP photos that burst with colour and detail. There’s a DIGIC 7 processor for nailing photos in low-light conditions, plus a Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus for super-fast Live View focusing – that continuous focusing is also amazing when capturing Full HD footage at 60fps.

Confession: I often end up with blurry photographs. Can this help?

The EOS 200D has your back here, too: a large APS-C sensor makes easy work of shooting with shallow depth of field (ideal for portraits). If you intentionally want some background blur, that sensor will keep your subject’s face looking sharp in the forefront.

Okay, I’m in! When can I buy this?

The Canon EOS 200D is available to pre-order this month and to buy this August.
