FULL-FRAME DSLRS

Go big or go home? These powerhouses set a new standard in digital photography

-

There’s no two ways about it: a top of the range full-frame camera is the way to go if you want the highest resolution and don’t mind the extra bulk. The major benefit of having a high-resolution sensor is the sheer amount of detail it can capture. With that in mind, a full-frame DSLR is the best match if you’re a landscape lover, wedding photographer, or fine art aficionado looking to make largerthan-life prints.

First up, the Nikon D850 (£2,699) is quite possibly the most impressive and well-rounded DSLR you could wish for. The sensor provides 45.7 megapixels of resolution and an outstanding dynamic range that’ll render portraits and high-dynamic scenes into a thing of beauty. The 153-point autofocus is sophisticated and precise, and it can even autofocus low-light situations with ease too. The D850 should excel at shooting most subjects and genres, but the 7fps of continuous shooting is a touch on the slow side for fast-moving or unpredictable subjects. If you are ready to invest, bear in mind that it’s around double the weight of the smaller mirrorless cameras. The only DSLR that can seriously compete with the D850 is the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (£3,229). Although it doesn’t match the resolution of the Nikon (at 30.4MP), the Mark IV does inherit something that Canon calls Dual Pixel AF technology. There are detection points on the imaging sensor itself, which means that autofocus is as speedy as some mirrorless cameras. At 800g, the 5D Mark IV is surprisingly light and compact given its pro performance. You’re bound to find it a joy to use no matter what genre you’re shooting.

Similarly priced, these DSLRS also boast similar other specs, including 4K footage, Wi-Fi, and a 7fps burst rate. So, which one is right for you? If you’ve got the budget, aren’t already heavily invested in Canon gear and want the best full-frame that your money can buy, go for the D850. It’s the ultimate mix of resolution, speed and sensitivity, that will enable you to photograph without limits.
