Canada Rocks

- PUBLISHER Janet P. Boileau

IT’S ONLY FITTING that in the sesquicentennial year we focus on all things marvellous about Canadian food and drink. This issue’s cover story does just that as we follow Joanne Sasvari on a tasting safari in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, one of the premier growing regions for British Columbian wine. BC produces some brilliant bottles and if you want to taste them, your best bet is to go there. The Okanagan Valley has 185 licensed wineries — just one more reason to head west.

Or south. Also in this issue Anita Stewart, one of the most passionate advocates of Canadian food and food producers, draws our attention to an emerging culinary hotspot — Ontario’s Georgian Bay, inspired by the recipes in a new community cookbook, Come to Our Table.

Two people who know for a fact that Canadian cuisine rocks, from coast to coast, are bloggers Lindsay Anderson and Dana VanVeller. They made an epic road trip across Canada, travelling, eating, cooking and writing along the way. Their blog Feast: An edible road trip won a Saveur Best Food Blog Award in 2015 and the book that resulted from their blog was published by Random House last year. Feast the book is reviewed in this issue by our own Emily Kennedy.

We’re congratulating Emily on the launch of her new digital content company, Skunk Social (with friend and business partner Joanne Steventon) and their coup in landing the Canada C3 anniversary project as a client. They’ll be managing the social media strategy for a 160-day sailing trip around Canada, aboard an icebreaker, starting in Toronto and ending in Victoria.

It may still be cold outside but spring is on the way, and with it a bunch of exciting ways to celebrate this milestone year.
