The captain of the ship is returning to HFX Wanderers FC for at least two more seasons.

The Canadian Premier League team re-signed midfielder Andre Rampersad to a contract extension this week for two years, plus a club option for 2023.

“Reaching the finals last season was a big thing for us,” Rampersad said in a team release. “I know the majority of the guys are going to be back and we’re going to have our next chance to make the final. So it was an easy decision for me to make the decision to come back.”

“I met my girlfriend here in Halifax and with everything going on, you don’t know what’s going to happen in the world tomorrow, right?” he added. “So being in Halifax, feeling safe and feeling loved definitely helped me with my decision to (stay)… and for that long.”

The 25-year-old from

Trinidad and Tobago was one of the Wanderers first key signings in 2019 and he returned last year after a strong inaugural season. He was third on the team in minutes played with 820 in 11 games at the CPL Island Games in Charlottetown this summer to help the Wanderers make it to the championship match.

“It goes back to the first season when I got here,” Rampersad said in a release. “Kind of like being a nobody, coming into a team where you want to win something, and the people don’t really know you but they welcome you (anyway). Last season we didn’t do as well and they stuck with us. Even now throughout the pandemic they’ve stuck with us, didn’t cause a riot about not getting to see games, they just continue to support us as much as they can. To see that amount of support … it’s impossible not to fall in love with people like that. It’s an amazing thing that this city has and the people here. They continue to be so genuine and so nice.
