BORDEN, George Augustus

Of Dartmouth, answered that heavenly roll call on November 29, 2020 in his 85th year. Born December 17, 1935 in New Glasgow, he was the third of Hector and Ethel (Paris) Borden’s 18 children (nine boysnine girls). George’s youth was filled with sports, community and church grounded activities. Immediately following high school graduation, George joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in which he remained for 32 years while rising in rank from the lowest to Captain. In 1986, George became the first black Executive Assistant to a provincial cabinet minister in Nova Scotia history. Over his later years, in civilian life, George served as the Director of the Black United Front, the Black Cultural Center and historian of the Black Construction Battalion WWI/CEF 1916-20. As well, George founded or co-founded several cultural societies in Nova Scotia. George’s labour of love was creative poetry writing, song writing and writing military history, all of which have been made public in one form or another. George is survived by his wife, Lovelette (Saunders); son, Tab (Darlene); daughter, Barbara ( Stephen Cluett); brothers, Curtiss (Frances), Walter, Ted ( Phyllis), Monte (Billie), Lyle (Gary) and Derek (Bonnie); nephews brought up as brothers, Carlos ( Myla), and Wayne "Kip"; sisters, Muriel (Bobby) Smith, Gloria, Gussie ( Doug) Ellis, Arleen ( James) Paris, Ozell, Carol ( Milton) Green and Renee (Donald MacBeth); grandchildren, Keri, Holly and Wayne; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both parents; brothers, Wayne and Wilfred and sisters, Lois and Jerri. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Horizons Baptist Church.
