Irene Mary Macdonald passed away peacefully in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Palliative Care Unit on November 29, 2020 with her family by her side. Born in Whitney Pier on May 22, 1932. She was a daughter of PJ and Elizabeth Carroll (Evans). Mom graduated from St. Martha’s Hospital in 1953, where she went on to work in Maternity and then moved to the Neo-natal Unit at St. Rita’s Hospital for 25 years. She was instrument­al in helping with the start up of the Neo-natal Care Unit at St. Rita’s Hospital. She enjoyed her nursing career and mentoring to her colleagues. She is survived by her children, Peter (Patsy), PJ (Jen) and Jack. She is also survived by grandchild­ren, Melissa, Amanda, Jenny, Patrick, Paige, Taylor, Logan, Brittany, Stephen, Chris; and great-grandchild­ren, Alexander Patrick and Sophie. She was predecease­d by her husband, Douglas "Duke" Macdonald; daughter, Camille; and sons, Dougie (Lorraine) and Ronnie (Estella). Predecease­d by her sisters, Florence Keay, Kathleen "Kay" Macleod, Mary Cody and brother, Vincent Carroll. Due to COVID-19 health restrictio­ns, interment prayers will be held in Resurrecti­on Cemetery on Friday, December 4th for the immediate family only. Donations in mom’s memory can be made to the Palliative Care of Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The family would like to thank Dr. Carol Critchley for the care shown to Irene over the years as well a big thanks to all the staff of CBRH Palliative Care for the attention shown while Irene was there.
