CARTER, Maynard Lawrence

-

Age 77 of Amherst, born on March 31, 1943 passed suddenly at his home on December 5, 2020. He was predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Katherine (Smith) Carter. Maynard was educated in Amherst, and moved immediately upon graduation into the family business ( K. L. Carter and Son). Working with his father for several years, Maynard quickly established his footprint, and eventually acceded to the position of president, which he held until his death. His lifelong supporters in this endeavour was his wife Joan and his eldest son David. Ingrained in the veins of this company, Maynard established the importance of hard work, honesty, and family. Maynard was a master operator of all excavating equipment and always greeted new innovations with zeal and optimism. He was revered among his peers and competitors in the construction business as being one of the best. Maynard was persistently the first on the job and the last to leave, always delighting in a hard day’s work. Throughout his life behind the machine, Maynard always felt truly at home operating and working in the Fenwick Quarry. As a heavy equipment operator, Maynard’s sense of accomplishment was unmatched. His interests and hobbies were always pursued with his business partner and the love of his life, Joan Carter (Stiles). These included curling, traveling in their motorhome, cutting firewood, milling lumber and the vegetable garden. Furthermore, Maynard’s passion for outdoor activities was highlighted by his interest in snowmobiling, motorcycling, and riding side by side with family and friends. Always seeking to give back to his community, Maynard consistently demonstrated his loyalty to the Snowmobile Club by building roads, trails and bridges. Additionally, Maynard supported many organizations over the years, such as the Amherst Curling Club and Ducks Unlimited. Maynard and Joan’s best refuge was their camp at Long Lake and Sea Grove, where there was simply time to slow down, reflect, and relish about the wonderful family they had developed throughout life. Ironically, as he rested there, Maynard kept his hands and mind active, always coming up with new projects or tasks to explore. Maynard will be dearly missed by his wife, Joan (Stiles) of East Amherst; sons, David (Joyce) of Hastings; Larry (Trena) of Hastings; Mark ( Brenda) of River Hebert; and Karl (Jill) of Bay Roberts, N.L.; grandchildren, Matthew, Danielle, Thomas, Lauren, Owen, Madeline and Logan; great-grandchildren, Max and Landon; sister, Barbara Jane (Robert) Stevens of Mahone Bay; and extended family. Along with his parents, Maynard was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Grant; stepbrothers, Edmond Reid and Clarence Reid; stepsisters, Lauris Lewis and Josephine Trebbne. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 8th from 7-9 p.m. followed by the Funeral Service held on Wednesday, December 9t, at 2 p.m. with Rev.
