JANGAARD, Peter Michael

-

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Peter Jangaard onDecember 2, 2020 at the age of 93. He was born in Alesund, Norway on October 24, 1927 to Nils and Borghild Jangaard. His early years were spent in Norway where he completed high school in 1945 during the five years of German occupation. The events of the war were the catalyst for his family leaving Norway in 1945 to join his father who was the Commercial Attaché at the Norwegian Embassy inwashington, D.C. Peter attended the University of California at Berkeley, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He later earned a Masters of Chemical Engineering/food Science at the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) in 1965. Upon graduation from university, Peter worked in Halifax and New York before returning to Norway and completing his compulsory military service with the Norwegian Royal Guards. He then accepted a position with the Fisheries Research Board of Canada and returned to Nova Scotia in April 1953, arriving through Pier 21. Peter started his career as a research scientist and retired 35 years later as Director of Fisheries Development at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Throughout his career he published numerous scientific papers including many on the health benefits of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Shortly after returning to Halifax, Peter met the love of his life, Margaret Vaughan, and they married in 1956. Margie and Peter spent 62 wonderful years together before she passed away in 2018. Peter was a man with many talents and interests. In retirement, he started a fisheries consulting firm and was also a freelance translator of Scandinavian language documents for the Translation Bureau in Ottawa. He became interested in family history and published several genealogy books on families in Nova Scotia, New England, and Norway. He was an avid stamp collector and had a lifelong love of classical music and gardening. Margaret and Peter were keen bridge players and they both achieved the rank of Silver Life Master. We all enjoyed many happy summers with family and friends at the cottage in Musquodoboit Harbour. More cherished memories were made at the fishing camp and through family trips to Norway. Peter lived his life as a true gentleman, always kind and dignified with a smile that could light up a room. He was a man of few words, but they were always meaningful and worth listening to. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a wonderful role model for all of us, we will miss his wisdom and advice. Survived by his children, Ingrid (Kevin Latimer), Chris ( Krista), and Tom, all of Halifax; and grandchildren, Hugh, Anna, Rose, Kirsti, Tom, Ruby, George; and former daughter- in-law, Kim Farmer. He is also survived by his sister, Ingrid Jangaard Ousland in Norway; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Margaret; grandchild, Sam Jangaard; and sister, Bjorg Loe. Many thanks to the staff at Melville Lodge for their care of Peter over the last year. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
