2021 Ram HD bears down with diesel-segmentbest 1,075 lb.-ft. of torque

You knew this was coming eventually, right? After the crew at Ram broke the ceiling of four-figure torque in a consumer-grade pickup, Ford was quick to respond with 1,050 lb.-ft. in its 2020 Super Duty line of trucks.

Today, Ram answers in kind with an announcement stating the 2021 line of Ram HD pickups will be available with a staggering 1,075 lb-ft of grunt.

“Ram regains capability leadership by delivering the highest ever torque rating for a diesel pickup truck and heaviest gooseneck towing capacity,” said Mike Koval Jr., head of Ram brand.

Working with Cummins, the 2021 diesel improvements include higher boost limits through a variable geometry turbo and flow-rate increases through the fuel delivery system.

This, apparently, is enough to enable the 6.7-litre I6 to produce an additional 75 lb.-ft. of torque.

It would seem horsepower remains unchanged.

Note well, truck shoppers: Ram currently offers its Cummins diesel in two flavours.

This new torque figure is specific to the Cummins 6.7L High Output engine, a mill available only on the 3500-series truck and mated to an Aisin six-speed automatic.

The standard output diesel, also marketed as a Cummins, gives up 30 horsepower and a bunch of torque, topping out at 850 lb.-ft. of twist.

When shopping, make sure you’re getting the engine you want, whether you’re using it for actual work or bragging rights.

Elsewhere, the 2021 Ram HD is now rated at a maximum gooseneck towing capacity of 37,100 lbs. and 23,000 lbs. for a conventional tow-behind trailer.

Again, these numbers are hyper-specific to a certain powertrain and cab/bed configuration.

Check your own truck’s rating before hitching up and hitting the road.

Also new for 2021, the Ram Heavy Duty now features a digital rearview mirror which can display video in real time from a rear-facing camera.

This will be helpful to those who are piloting a Ram with a completely loaded bed.

Luddites can turn off this function and revert back to a traditional reflective mirror while waiting for a fax at their office.
