WRECKING TENANTS’ RIGHTS

-

What a shock to see the picture on the front page of your Dec. 5 edition and the associated story on page A4 about how the legal tenancy of “Andrew” was abruptly terminated by an excavator demolishing Ardmore Hall at the direction of Mosaik Properties, owner of Ardmore Hall Ltd., “Andrew's” landlord.

It is reported that “Andrew's” legal process, including a December hearing before the Residential Tenancy Board to challenge his eviction, has been hindered by the demolition this past Friday of his apartment and the one above it.

What kind of jurisdiction are we living in that allows such action to be taken towards a citizen's only residence? Where are our city councillors to protect us from such illegal actions?

To prevent such an event from occurring again, a detailed investigation is required, and if found guilty, Mosaik Properties, the prospective developer, should be dealt with very seriously.

As humans, we should not treat each other like this. Money and greed should not trump fair consideration and civility. Are we not civilized? If developers are allowed to run amok with demolition equipment anytime the mood hits them, then what does the future hold for legal tenants? So much for laws and bylaws; we are, or should be, better than the causes which culminated in “Andrew's” tragic and completely unnecessary situation. Time for those in the halls of power to do their jobs.
