Tucker takes unanimous win at UFC 256

Gavin Tucker won a threeround unanimous decision over Billy Quarantill­o in a featherwei­ght bout on the undercard of UFC 256 in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Tucker, a Ship Cove, N.L., native who trains out of Halifax, was a 30-27 winner on all three scorecards.

The win was the third consecutiv­e for Tucker and fourth in five UFC fights. Overall, he has a 13-1 record.

Tucker recorded 123 strikes, including 106 of the significan­t variety while Quarantill­o only managed 84 significan­t strikes.

The loss ended an eightbout winning streak for the fighter from Ransomvill­e, N.Y.

“It was a tough fight,” said the 34-year-old Tucker at the news conference following the match. “Those are the kind of fights that make you grow. I got another three rounds in and that’s great for experience. My octagon time is building up.”

Tucker got an early wakeup call in the first round when Quarantill­o landed a hard right hand that prompted a clinch and a takedown.

Later in the round, Tucker settled in and scored a big blow with a head kick and a takedown.

Tucker found his mark in the second round by delivering several shots and another takedown.

Overall, Tucker had seven takedowns and he used that to his advantage in the final round to secure the victory.

Tucker is looking forward to his next opportunit­y in the octagon.

“I’m good for every four months, I’ve said that before. There’s going to be a little bit of a rest period. I have to quarantine for two weeks and I can lockup some of these guys with me so I can continue to train and continue to grow.

“I’m down for whatever comes.”

The main event of UFC 256 saw Deiveson Figueiredo battle to a majority draw with Brandon Moreno in a flyweight titlefight.
