BROWN, Eleanor Christena

-

Age 86, Halifax, peacefully passed away on December 12, 2020 with her family by her side. A dear mother, sister, grandmother and friend to many, Eleanor was born on January 19, 1934 in River John, Pictou Co., daughter of the late George and Velda (Langille) Redmond. She is survived by her son, Steven (Elizabeth); daughters Sandra, Sylvia (Scott) Kenney; grandchildren, Matthew (Christine) Rose, Natalie and Nicholas; greatgrandchildren, Mackenzie, Madison, and Mackayla; and siblings, Jean Massenger and Louise Cruikshanks, Ontario; Shirley (Mike) Lipton, and Harley (Helen) Redmond. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; both parents; and sisters, Muriel Manning, Mabel Redmond, and Betty Leblanc. Eleanor left River John and moved to Halifax in her late teens, later working for several years at Simpsons. She and Kenneth ran a boarding house from 1960-2015 in Halifax and many of the boarders have fond memories of the delicious home cooked meals and hospitality she offered. Over the years Eleanor had many interests which included taking courses in accounting, real estate, sewing, knitting, and making sweaters one winter for everyone in the family. Eleanor enjoyed keeping fit and took fitness classes, yoga and had a personal trainer. She and Kenneth often walked throughout the city and parks and you would often see her walking around her North End neighborhood. Eleanor and Kenneth loved to go dancing with their friends on weekends and later in life she took up ballroom dancing. They enjoyed travelling and took trips across Canada and throughout the United States. In her younger years she and Kenneth went berry-picking in the summer and kept a garden in their backyard. You could find her in the kitchen in the fall making her own pickles, jams and jellies for the family and offered to the boarders with their meals. She relished spending time with her family and friends at her cottage in River John. Eleanor loved special occasions and made every one meaningful for those she loved. Eleanor was wholeheartedly devoted to her husband, children, family, and friends and will be greatly missed by all. May we all take comfort in knowing that she is happily once again in the arms of her husband, who she missed dearly, and those that she loved.
