-

It is with great sadness that the family of Carmel Gillis, 74, announces her death on Saturday, December 12, 2020 in the An Cala Palliative Care unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney on October 17, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Hugh and Mary (Macadam) Gillis, who both grew up in East Bay (St. Mary’s Parish). She attended Holy Angels High School and graduated from St. Rita’s School of Nursing. She was employed for more than 30 years as a nurse, first at St. Rita’s Hospital and then at Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Carmel was known for her caring, sympathetic interest in her patients. She was a compassionate caregiver also with her extended family, and we will remember her for her cheerful kindness. She loved her family home at 79 Union St. She enjoyed summers at the family bungalow at East Bay. Each year when tickets for Celtic Colours first went on sale, Carmel was near the front of the line. Carmel is survived by her brothers, Hugh (Doris) and Allan ( Judy); her sister, Clare (late Harvey); and by several nieces and nephews who were important in her life. She was predeceased by brothers, Donald and Robert (Hannah); sister, Genevieve and infant sisters, Margaret (Carmel’s twin) and Leone. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Glen and Emily Gracie for their friendship and support for Carmel over many years. A visitation will take placein T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16th.
