RITCHIE (Holden), Hazel Irma

August 16, 1920-December 13, 2020. Hazel was born August 16, 1920. She was the eldest daughter of Simon Gibbons Holden and Blanche (Pierce) Holden. Born in Shelburne and lived in Jordan Falls. Hazel attended Normal College in Truro, attaining her teachers license in 1939. She taught in one-room schools in Shelburne Co., for several years. Hazel met and married Charles Douglas "Doug" Ritchie in 1943. Doug was in the Navy, stationed in Shelburne at the time. The family of four moved to Dartmouth after the war. She took an accounting course and did the bookkeepin­g for Dad’s business Doug’s Sheet Metal for 30 years. She was a member of the United Church of Canada, an avid bowler and a supporter of the P.C. Party. Hazel is survived by her daughters, Louise Hallett (the late Jack), Dartmouth; Joyce Chevalier (Rodney Hall), Stewiacke; and Rev. Nancy Ritchie, Shubenacad­ie; grandchild­ren, Gerald Tanton, Scott Tanton (Tara), Ian Dauphinee, Joel Dauphinee (Sheryl); step grandchild­ren, Sherry Harris (Bill) and Alan Hallett (Wendy); great- grandchild­ren, Ben Tanton, Nate Tanton, David Tanton, Harper Tanton, Taylor, Lana, Logan and Chelsea Dauphinee; step great-grandchild­ren, Jordan and Jackie Harris, Jared and Taylor Hallett. Hazel is survived by her sister, Jean Clarke, Kingston; also many Holden and Ritchie nieces and nephews. Hazel was predecease­d by her parents; husband, Doug; and brothers, Earl, Frank, Harold and sister, Marion; granddaugh­ter, Jennifer Tanton. She was also predecease­d by Doug’s nine brothers and sisters and their spouses. Hazel and daughters would want to thank all the wonderful people, guys and gals at Sagewood Residentia­l Care for their outstandin­g love and care of her for the past six years. We know she could not have lived in a better home than Sagewood. If anyone wishes to make a donation in Hazel’s name, please consider Sagewood’s Recreation.
